Recliners need a separate footrest panel

This is the one that goes wrong most often. A straight armchair cover stretched over a recliner traps the footrest: the mechanism either jams or tears the fabric on the first use. Recliner covers here are cut in sections, with the footrest panel free to travel. If your chair reclines, buy the recliner cut even if the armchair cover looks like it would fit.

Loose seat cushions

When the sofa is fine but the seat cushion has gone shiny, you do not need a whole sofa cover. Measure the cushion itself — width, depth and thickness — out of the frame, not the sofa it sits in. A cushion cover that fits the sofa dimensions will be far too big.

Suitcase covers

Sized by shell height with the wheels excluded, which is the number airlines and manufacturers both ignore. They keep scuffs and belt marks off a hard shell, make the case identifiable on a carousel, and come off for a cold wash. They do not add protection against impact and they are not lockable.

Washing

Cold machine wash, hang to dry. Recliner covers go back on more easily while very slightly damp — work the footrest panel into place first, then the back, then tuck the sides. Suitcase covers should be dried fully before the case goes back into storage.
